Gopalasamudram is a village situated on the southern bank of the river Tambirabarani in Tirunelveli District, TamilNadu, India.
The river Tambirabarani finds mention in the Valmiki Ramayana along with many other rivers of India . The 41st Chapter of Kishkindha Kanda of Valmiki Ramayana mentions Tambirabarani. This Tambirabarani river is the life force of the village economy and society.
The origin of Tambirabarani river is on the western ghats and this river is one of the important sources for providing water, required for the agricultural activities and for other use , particularly providing the drinking water supply
Majority of the people in this village are engaged in agriculture. While a few of them possess the lands of their own, the rest work in those agricultural lands on wages. The rice is the main food grain grown in these lands. Besides the cultivation of rice , some are engaged in the cultivation of of plantains .
They are grown, atleast, two times in a year.
However, after the harvest, in the intervening period, before the next growing session commences, some other leguminous plants or some food grains like “ududh ka dal “ (ulundu) or some seeds of oil varieties etc are grown if the environmental conditions are favourable .
There is a small dispensary with a medical doctor who provides the normal health care and first aid facilities.
The maternity facilities with a doctor and midwife are also available.
There is a village Panchayat who administer in the best possible way for the general upkeep of environmental cleaning/protection and providing the basic necessities for the people,such as drinking water supply to their houses on pipes /public hand pumps for the ground water ,street lighting etc, besides the collection of taxes .This village provides education to all, through the government recogonised elementary schools and an High School,
PANNAI VENKATARAMA IYER HIGH SCHOOL, GOPALASAMUDRAM , by name.
( In short it is well known as P.V.High School, Gopalasamudram )
All the temples(kovils) are fairly well maintained and organized by the cooperation of all the village residents . The daily and special pujas are all performed with great degree of enthusiasm and devotion. On both Perumal Kovil and Sivan Kovil, two teachers of P.V.High school are the Archagas and they perform the pujas daily.
All important festivals and pujas such as “Garudasevai” , Thirumanjanam,Navarathri Alankaram & other special Sravanam Poojas etc in Perumal Kovil while Pradhosha kala pujai ,Sankadahara Chathurthi, Sashti pujai, Navrathri Alankarams & other special Poojas like VakaithAshtami etc in Sivan Kovil are performed with great devotion and with good attendance.
Similarly in “Vadakuvachelli Amman Kovil” and “Mariamman Kovils” in Marugal and Piranjeri, besides the daily and important festival pujas , the annual festival popularly known as “AMMAN KODAI” are performed with great devotion and enthusiasm.
There is a Church for the Christians to offer the prayers with dignity and decorum.
In effect, in this village the people of different religious faiths live very peacfully with mutual respect for each other and with good understanding.
Last but not least, this village does have the public utility services like Post Office and a nationalised Bank (UCO BANK).
The telecommuciation facilities are provided by BSNL and many people in this village have telephone facilities in their houses.
There is a public telecommunication faclity—PCO— to contact anywhere in India and abroad.
There is a good public transport ( Bus) services at regular intervals to commute to Tirunelvelly,the District head quarters in the east (abt 8Kms distance)and Ambasamudram ,the taluk centre in the west(abt 10 Kms).
Besides this, private transports are also available.

The most striking and admirable one in this village is the PANNAI VENKATARAMA IYER HIGH SCHOOL,GOPALASAMUDRAM which was founded by the great philanthropist
SHRI. PANNAI VENKATARAMA IYER in the year 1904. It is now more than 100 years old . This P.V.High school offer education for both boys and girls upto S.S.L.C.
Innumerable students , not only from this village but also from the nearby places upto about 6 to 8 Kms ,such as Tharuvai, Chuthammalli, Melacheval,Muneerpallam, Thirunankovil, Narasinghanallur, Karunkadu,etc have been benefited in reeiving the High school education upto S.S.L.C. (presently it is known as 10th standard). Earlier days even students from far-off places (more than 12-15 Kms) like Pathai,Kozhimapuram, Kalakad,Valliuoor, Singukulam ,Samboorvadagarai etc used to come to this village for their education.
Many students have come out of this institution in brilliant colours. Of whom, some are very famous and well known engineers ,doctors , scientists , lawyers, administrators,entrepreneurs etc. who have been occupying or occupied the highest positions in government, Public or in Private sectors , not only in India but also in different countries throughout the world, such as US,UK,Europe, Singapore, Malasiya, etc to mention a few.
In this context, it is with great pleasure and pride, we may now mention that Dr.G.S.Venkataraman , a very well known and outstanding Agricultural Scientist( IARI ,NewDelhi) of our village and old student of this great P.V.High School, Gopalasamudram, received encomiums from all over the world for his excellent research in Agriculture to achieve optimum realisation of agricultural produces. In recognition thereof, Dr.G.S.Venkataraman was given the prestigious “Dr.Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar Award” and the coveted “Shri Sanjay Ghandi Award” by Government of India.
Similarly we may take pride in mentioning that two gentlemen, namely,Shri G S Srinivasan and Shri N V Sundararaman , from this village, have come out meritoriously in the Examination conducted by Union Public Service Comission ,Government of India, to be qualified as IAS (Indian Administrative Service) officers.Both Shri G S Srinivasan and Shri N V Sundararaman have served with distinction both in the central and state Governments.
Shri Sundararaman also served as a teacher in the PV High school before he got into the IAS in the early years after independance
Recently in the year 2003, one of the oldstudents of this P.V.High School,Thiru.Pulavar C.Shanmuganandham B.Lit;B.Ed, (retired as Head master from Sri Gandhiji Thuvakka Palli ,Keezha Desamanikkam,Thirunelvelli District.) has received the “National Award for Best Teacher” from The President of India Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam .

It is really heartening and gives a great sense of pride and satisfaction to know that many more from this school have achieved the best in their respective fields .
. The whole credit for all these great achievements is to go to the entire and highly devoted teaching faculty, present and the past , consisting of Headmasters and teachers, from the time memorial– year 1904,— from the very inception of this great P.V.High School , Gopalasamudram .

The Government of TamilNadu bear the expenses for the salary of Headmaster and teachers and some administrative staff. However, the Government have frozen this quantum of expenditure on this account. Further whenever the superanuation of a teacher takes place or any one of them resigns , the salary, for the replacement of such teachers appointed in those vacancies is to be borne by the Management only, as Government desire that the Management should make provision for the required funds to meet the expenditure to give the salary for such appointees.
This poses a financial problem for the Management of this school, as the salary for some of the extra teaching staff which are absolutely necessary , is to be borne by the Management. Inorder to sustain and maintain the quality of education there should be adequate number of teaching staff . Further , the expenditure to be involved , on the infrastructure like provision of additional or replacement of old benches, furniture, laboratory equipments/tools , books for library, materials for sports and extra curricular activities besides the upkeep of buildings and environments, and other day to day expenses,etc, is to be brone by the Management .Infact this school does not have even a single computer though , nowadays, it is very essential to learn this subject with “hands on” practice .
Hence the Management is striving very hard to maintain this old and great institution to provide a reasonably high quality of education to all the village students.
It is therefore necessary to mobilize the funds, seeking donations from well wishers, the philanthropists and old students of this great and wellknown institution—–P.V.High School, Gopalasamudram.
For those who had their education in this school will definitely feel proud and may think for a while that this institution have offered them, a very valuable education, to derive and enjoy many benefits in their life. Perhaps many old students,philanthropists and other well wishers may like to contribute their donation for this noble cause to sustain and maintain this P.V.High School , Gopalasamudram for many many more years to come.

Besides the above “Gopalasamudram Kalvi Vridhi Sangam” which is mainly for the improvement and to sustain the maintenance of P.V.High School Gopalsamudram, recently, A Private Trust known as “GOPALASAMUDRAM VELLAI PILLAIYAR,VISWANATHA SWAMY SRINIVASA PERUMAL TEMPLES TRUST” shortly called G.V.V.S.TRUST is formed on 16 MARCH 2006 .The objects of this Trust are detailed below.
The authors of the TRUST are
1) Sri R.SIVARAMAN residing at Old no 20, New no 24,Fifth Main Road, Raja Annamalipuram, Chennai 600028,and
2.Sri.Mohan Srinivasan S/O Sri Meenakshisundaram resideng at Old No.19, New No.50, Archbishop Mathias Avenue,Chennai 600028.
The office of this TRUST will be at the residence of Shri R.SIVARAMAN ,Old no 20,New no 24, Fifth Main Road Raja Annamalaipuram, Chennai 600028.
The Authors of this above G.V.V.S.Trust declare that this Tust will carryout the following objects.
a) To undertake improvements,renovations,repairs and maintenance of the above 3 Temples at Gopalasamudram.
b) To perform Kumbhaabishekam of the above named three temples at Gopalasamudram.
c) To undertake any activity relating to the said Trust in the conduct of daily poojas,festivals appropriate to the above named three temples in Gopalasamudram village.
d) To arrange for provision of Annadhanam,Vidyadhanam,etc. at these temples in the village consistant with the principles of the Sanadhana Dharma.
e) To construct or maintain cottages under the control of the Trust for the benefit of devotees come to worship at these temples in the village.
f) To receive donations from individuals and organisations for undertaking the activities related to the objects of the Trust.
g) To invest the excess funds of the Trust in stocks, shares, securities and deposits in Banks and other Institutions consistent with the rules and regulations of the Central and State Governments and the Reserve Bank of India.
h) To organize any other activity in order to effectuate the above objects,
i)To amend ,add, or delete any of the provisions contained in this Trust.
The Trust shall be governed and administered by the Board of Trustees mentioned below.
1). Authors of the Trust
2). Trustees nominated by the Authors of the Trust, immediately after the Declarations of the Trust.
Now after forming this Trust it is now decided that the Kumbhaabishekam is performed on all the above 3 Temples. As a first function for this, The Kumbhaabishekam function for VellaPillaiyar Temple, situated in the middle of the fields in the west of our village, will be held on 04 MAY 2006 .All are cordially requested to attend this unique and subsequent Kumbhaabishekam functions for the other two temples(The dates will be announced soon) .For conducting Kumbhaabishekam and for generating sufficient fund in the Trust to carry out all its objectives, generous donations may please be offered by villagers ,wellwishers and philanthropists.

Recently the Kumbhaabishekam for all the 3 temples ,namely Vellaipillaiyar, Sivan and Perumal Kovils were celebrated in a fairly grand scale on 04 May, 02 July and on 13 July 06 respectively. Many persons — besides people from our own villagae and nearby villages, people from out stations like Chennai,Bangalore,Mumbai, Delhi and Calcutta attended and participated in great number. In general Kumbhaabishekams were well organised and very well celebrated with great enthusiasm and devotion and well attended too ,for all the programs, for 3 days before Kumbhaabishekam function of each Temple.
